Why health communication is broken – and how we fix it

We’re living in a time where more people than ever speak publicly about health – yet the conversation has never been more confusing. Why?

Here’s what I see:

1) People without formal training speak with absolute certainty

2) Audiences rarely ask where the information comes from

3) Extreme messages get the most traction – because they appeal to our black-and-white thinking

But the human body isn’t binary. Health isn’t ideological.

Sugar Is Not Toxic: A Scientific Perspective

Sugar is not a toxin. You cannot “detox” from sugar. Sugar often gets a bad rap in today’s health-conscious world, with many headlines labeling it as “toxic.” But when we take a closer look at the science, the reality is more nuanced. Sugar, in and of itself, is not toxic — it is a natural component of many foods and plays important roles in human biology.

Wondering whether Ozempic is right for you?

Drugs like Ozempic are increasingly used for weight loss purposes. While calories in vs. calories out do matter and most of us are simply too sedentary, the cause of obesity is complex. Obesity is one of the biggest challenges we face today for various reasons - only some of which we are in control of. Some of us suffer from emotional overeating/ binge eating disorder that requires a completely different treatment approach than conventional dieting advice offers. Some of us have loads of environmental toxins in our body i.e. microplastics messing with our hormones. Some of us are not sleeping properly - poor sleep is directly linked to insulin resistance and weight gain. We really need to get better at understanding our own body and which things we can control. We also need to get better as practitioners in the health care system at working cross disciplinary together and understand the interplay of various factors to better help the client. Calorie counting is simply not cutting it anymore.

WATCH MY TALK: Functional medicine strategies to protect ourselves from EMFs

This summer I was in Germany to give a lecture on how best to protect yourself - from a functional medical point of view - against the harmful effects of EMF radiation from our smartphones, wifi, baby monitors etc.

At present, it is common knowledge that men's sperm quality i.a. is significantly affected because we carry our mobile phones. close to the body.

More and more research is coming out about far more disturbing consequences of radiation damage - and no matter how inconvenient we may think it is to deal with, it affects our own and our children's health regardless of us closing our eyes to inconvenient facts.

Watch my talk on the health issues surrounding #EMF exposure and how to protect ourselves via functional medicine strategies.

Supplement focus: how PQQ might help better your sleep!

PQQ is an antioxidant and based on recent research, it shows to be more powerful at fighting free radicals than vitamin C - this directly impacts and lowers inflammation and stress in our body.

A small, 8-week study in 17 people found that taking 20 mg of PQQ daily resulted in significant self-reported improvements in sleep quality and fatigue. This is thought to be mainly due to its effect on normalizing cortisol levels.

Should you take probiotics with antibiotics?

While it may seem contradictory, clinical research suggests that is helps to minimize the damaging side effects on your gut microbiome, if you take certain probiotics together with antibiotics.

The best probiotic to take with antibiotics are particular strains that can be taken alongside antibiotics, rather than separately.

These particular strains are

Why Nutritional Therapies Are Rejected By Mainstream Medicine

“The medical community has been slow to adopt targeted nutritional supplementation for mental health and healing—a form of rejection and resistance dubbed “The Tomato Effect.” But a new paradigm—a “redefined” perspective—is slowly but surely gaining ground.

For decades, I’ve struggled to understand the tragically slow pace that medicine adopts to the role of diet and nutrition on brain health. This article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) from 1984 has given me insight on why and it may be illuminating for you too. Please let me know your thoughts.

In the article I’m referring to, titled “The Tomato Effect,” the team of Dr. James Goodwin (internal medicine) and Dr. Jean Goodwin (psychiatry) wrote:

“The tomato effect in medicine occurs when an efficacious treatment for a certain disease is ignored or rejected because it does not ‘make sense’ in light of the accepted theories of disease mechanism and drug interaction.”

Lessons from 15 years in clinical practice: 4 Key Things That Cause Migraines

Headaches are almost as commonly accepted as the flu these days. And while there are many reasons why we suffer from headaches in our modern sedentary lifestyle, it is not something we should accept - it is a sign the something is off and painkillers alone is not going to bring our body back in balance even if they temporarily can help calm the pain.

Many of the same triggers that causes a simple headache are involved in the more severe migraine attacks. Migraines are not the same as regular headaches that most people experience occasionally. During a migraine attack, you may feel sharp, stabbing pain, typically on one side of the head. Migraines are much more intense than regular headaches and often come with other symptoms like visual disturbances, nausea and vomiting.

Headaches, especially migraines, can greatly affect your quality of life.

Prolonged migraines may result in a combination of chronic migraines and tension headaches.

While every body and biochemistry is unique, I have found some or all of factors to be the root causes of migraines in most cases:

To grain or not to grain?

That seems to be the main question on most people’s mind these days. Personally I always recommend taking advice on matters from professionals who are educated in the field you seek advice in, i.e. seek nutrition advice from professionals who are educated and hold a degree in nutrition science and seek medical advice and diagnostics from professionals who have a medical training. If we did that, and if we as professionals respected different educational backgrounds and trainings, instead of thinking “we know it all”, it would lead to a lot less confusion and malpractice in the health arena.

Anyway, today I want to share this video on the subject of grains with two very different takes on the matter - Dr. Perlmutter, a Medical Doctor and author of “Grain Brain” and Dr. John Douillard, DC, CAP a globally recognized leader in the fields of natural health, Ayurveda, and sports medicine. I find it incredibly nice that these two personalities in their own right are able to discuss their different takes on this almost religious matter in such a civil manner.

NEW TALK: 4 HEALTH HACKS FOR WINTER

I am doing a new talk this Winter for companies. Ask your workplace to book this 60 minute talk and walk away with a better understanding of how you can work with your body and the seasons to gain effortless health and truly thrive in the body you are in.

While there are no short-cuts or magic formulas when it comes to health, it is key that we understand both our own body’s biochemical blueprint through lab testing in addition to how the intelligence of nature impacts us. So that we understand when is the time to support detoxification in the body and when is the time to nourish for hormonal balance. If we fight nature, health becomes a constant battle.

Rather we want to understand how we as human beings are connected to the intelligence in nature and embrace the changing seasons to best support our gut and brain health and just overall wellbeing.

NEW INTERVIEW: Cancer nutrition with Dr. Kurt Woeller D.O.

Dr. Kurt Woeller D. O. is one of the pioneers in understanding biochemical abnormalities related to autism and neurological issues. I highly recommend working with him if you or anyone you know struggles with autism - his knowledge is unsurpassed.

His detailed biochemical understanding of health and disease is truly unique and I’ve followed his work for the last decade along with - unbeknownst to him - I happened to take a training course in organic acid testing led by Dr. Woeller approx a decade ago.

Today I had the pleasure of being on his newly released podcast “Doc Talks”. He is truly one of a select handfuld of incredibly knowledgable practitioners, I have been lucky enough to either be mentored by or work directly with - i.e. Dr. Eric Braverman MD, Dr. Deepak Chopra MD, Dr. Rau MD, Dr. Greg Melvin (who I also collaborate currently with on analysing my clients’ thermography scans) and Dr. Woeller D.O.

Feeling fat and depressed on keto? You may have a defect on your carnitine-transporter

Are you following keto and find that you CANNOT lose weight and rather you are actually gaining weight?

Then it may be because you belong to the group that has a defect in the carnitine transporter.

No one is designed to follow an extreme diet like keto for the rest of their lives - but there may be times when restrictions on certain food groups are necessary due to illness and imbalances.

Even though we humans are bio-individual, we are still built very similarly in terms of how we convert energy in the body and build muscles etc.

There is no good science behind all of these come-and-go theories that exclude carbohydrates for everyone, or fat for everyone, or animal protein for all.

Some of us can thrive on these diets because we - perhaps for the first time in our lives - clean up our bad eating habits and decide to now completely exclude junk food and finally eat "real food". It's always a good idea to eat "real food" from nature, but it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the ratio or exclusion of carbohydrates/proteins/fats.

However, for people with a defect in the carnitine-transporter, it can be very harmful to eat keto because they have a reduced ability to convert fat (ketones) into energy - and instead store it in the body.

Natural vitamins may be superior to synthetic ones

There appears to be a tendency to label those who profess that natural vitamins are better than synthetic ones as quacks. This broad brush label may be stifling legitimate nutrition research. This paper describes physiochemical differences between certain natural and synthetic vitamins, proven clinical advantages of natural vitamins, and some of the effects this labeling may lead to. It concludes that lessons of history as well as modern science support the view that natural vitamins are nutritionally superior to synthetic ones.”
